LBJ School Students Brief Intelligence Community Leaders

News | May 19, 2016

Nine LBJ School students from the Policy Research Project on Intelligence in American Society recently returned from Washington, D.C. where they briefed senior U.S. Intelligence Community officials on policy recommendations that emerged from their year-long study of intelligence oversight.

The policy “client” for the PRP was the Office of the Director National Intelligence, where the students met with the IC’s Civil Liberties and Privacy Officer and briefed Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence Stephanie O’Sullivan. The students also met at Ft. Meade with the National Security Agency’s Director Adm. Michael Rogers, Executive Director Corin Stone, and General Counsel. At Langley, the group briefed Central Intelligence Agency Deputy Director for Analysis Richard Hoch, and met separately with the directors of the CIA’s public and legislative affairs offices. During a soggy visit to Capitol Hill, the briefing team met with staff members from the Senate and House intelligence oversight committees in the HPSCI’s secure hearing room.  The PRP’s final report–including 34 recommended reforms to improve the quality of executive, legislative and judicial oversight of U.S. Intelligence–will be published in the summer. This PRP was sponsored by the Intelligence Studies Project, and led by LBJ Clinical Professor and ISP Director Steve Slick and LBJ School Associate Professor Will Inboden, who also serves as Executive Director of the Clements Center for National Security. The Intelligence Studies Project is a joint venture of the Robert Strauss Center for International Security and Law and the Clements Center for National Security.
